A Few Guidelines to Start

I’m excited for you to get the best results possible and enjoy your experience during your cleanse. In the days leading up to your juice fast, here are a few guidelines to help you prepare:

(Some people choose to do raw food with their juice – you can do that also if you would like)

  • Eat light, and try to make sure what you eat is raw. As many raw fruits and veggies as possible are best!
  • Drink lots of fresh, purified water before, during, and after your cleanse, to help reduce the possibility of feeling tired and sluggish as your body detoxes.
  • Avoid processed sugar, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and greasy, processed foods. They can undermine the benefits of your cleanse program.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do if I start to feel really hungry?

The first and second days of the cleanse are usually the days where the urge to eat is the strongest. Drinking plenty of juice and water can help with feeling hungry. Set a timer, and drink one half of your 16 ounce juice every hour over a 10 hour period. Drink plenty of fresh, purified water in between.

If you absolutely feel like you must eat something, eat a piece of raw fruit or a vegetable such as cucumbers or celery. Watermelon can be very filling as well, if it is in season. Am I getting enough protein and nutrition? During a cleanse, you are actually receiving more nutrition than usual in a very short period of time. Green leafy vegetables are important sources of protein as well.

The vitamins, minerals and enzymes in the plants you are consuming are concentrated with the removal of the pulp.

The nutrition that is usually lost in the digestive process is now going straight into the bloodstream for healing, detoxification and repair. How much weight can I expect to lose?

This amount can vary from one person to the next.

How you prepared your body to do the cleanse is also a factor. If you ate plenty of raw, live food before the fast and are drinking plenty of water before and during this time period, it can make a big difference!

Anywhere from 3 to 10 pounds is a common number of shed pounds during a 3 to 5 day cleanse period. What can I do if I feel tired, achy, or sluggish?

This can often happen from alcohol, nicotine, or caffeine withdrawal. Other times the body may need more juice, water, or even sleep.

Another thing to consider is if the bowels are working properly. During a cleanse, the digestive system is taking a rest and bowel movements begin to slow or stop all together. When waste deposits into the large intestine and just sits there, it can be reabsorbed into the body and make you feel tired or sick. Keeping the bowels moving is very important during this time.

Ground flaxseed in a glass of apple juice, a natural herbal laxative, or a glass of prune juice may help keep the bowels moving during your cleanse. Can I store the juice ahead of time? If so, how long can I store my juice?

This depends on the juicer you are using for your cleanse. A good quality, masticating juicer that works at a slow speed often allows you to store your juice for up to 72 hours.

A centrifugal juicer splits the cells of the plant at a high speed, causing the fruits and vegetables to oxidize more quickly and lose their nutritional value. Your owner’s manual should tell you how long you have to store your juice. With some juicers, the juice needs to be consumed immediately. Other centrifugal juicers, such as the Breville, allow you to store your juice for up to 24 hours.

Which juicer you have determines how long you can store your juice ahead of time. Am I getting enough fiber during a cleanse? One purpose of a cleanse is to give your digestive system a rest so that it can take that energy, normally spent on digestion, and use it for healing and repair in the body.

Although most of the fiber is removed in the juicing process, some fiber does remain in your juice. Removal of this fiber allows the nutrients to be absorbed quickly into your bloodstream without taxing your digestive system extensively. Can I exercise during a cleanse?

Listening to your body during this time is important. You may feel very tired and need to rest. Other times you may feel like you can conquer the world.

If you are drinking enough juice each day, you should have enough fuel for exercise during your cleanse.

Much of the energy your body uses each day is spent on the breakdown and digestion of food intake, so you may even feel better and have more energy during your cleanse to exercise. How our juices are different
